Howard

For info, this site has been created for the descendants of JAMES ALFRED SMITH who, according to some research, travelled from Liverpool England, into the Pacific. He met his wife in Kiribati - ( formerly the Gilbert and Ellis Islands) and married in 1899. From this marriage, there were seven children and quite a few followons from there as anyone who has been slightly involved with this family would know!

Recently there has been discussions about a family reunion which would be quite an interesting, exciting event.

To make this possible, any family who can positively identify themselves as a descendant of the union in 1899 between the late James and Baia Smith is most welcome to post their stories and photos onto this page.

As an introduction, I am Howard Smith the son of William Smith who was a grandson (one of many) of James and Baia. Me, my sisters and a cousin - Walter Smith live in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and the subject of this reunion has been an interest for us, so we decided this would be a start. An attempt to generate and expand the interest from general discussions to the formation of units in your different countries who come together occasionally, as we do, to discuss and produce the tree formed by the generations after that first union way back in 1899! Along with the family discussions, dates and places where a grand reunion may take place have to be considered.

Well, I hope this generates some interest and movement toward this aim.

Hi, it's Jim, son of Walter Smith in Brisbane. Just as Leon and Jonas have said, we have already caught up with cousins we have probably walked past in town but never had a clue we were related to them.

Had a great time at the "meeting" at Aunty Moira's place down the coast. Looking forward to seeing more Smith's at the next meeting or Reunion in Brisbane

Kona Mauri / Hello !!! ……I would like to commend Howard for his effort in initiating the ‘pacific smith’
blog. We now have a forum where we can “meet” and introduce ourselves and identify our line of decendency from the 1899 union.
The formation of the family tree has been started by the Brisbane unit and is well past the beginning stage. To date there has been more than 500 names entered into the programme ------ which is only the tip off the iceberg. If any of you have information on your line of decendents , please pass it on to us so that we can get this tree growing. Send information to ..isalmb@hotmail.com
This is Walter Smith a 3rd generation offspring of James Alfred and Paia Smith . I am a branch of Robert and Margarita Smith whose son James ( Jimmy ) was my father. My grandfather Robert died at the age of 35yrs leaving behind 9 siblings in the care of my father who was the eldest son at 18.
I am married to Margaret and we have 2 sons and 3 daughters and 6 grandchildren with another due in August 2007.

Hi to all,

Well, the year has been long and exciting for some and sad for others. We have been in communication and decided on a planning meeting in Brisbane for the Australian contingent.

When : 10:00 October 20 - 21

Where : Brighton School Hall, Queensland

What : This will be the initial planning meeting for the Aust families who will be gathering in Brisbane from QLD, NSW and Victoria. We will be discussing things such as venue, date, and requirements for the big meeting which will hopefully include our NZ, Fiji and Kiribati cuzzies. And there is an indication of intent from the American connection. Quite a large group by accounts. We also intend to update the tree so if any of you not attending have information to include, either send it to Moira (email) or give it to someone you know who is coming.

Hope the family in other countries will be doing something similar soon and send their results on regarding the big reunion. At present the feeling is somewhere between June and August in Fiji.

Until the next time...

Hi Everybody,
This is Beth, I am Howards daughter. This is my first time "blogging" sad but true Dad has begun the Pacificblog site and I didn't even know what one was... Well anyway I am looking forward to meeting and hearing from MORE relos, if it is at all possible. I am in the Navy and currently living in Sydney. I am also in the ADF netball team,(water girl at the moment due to broken ankle still healing!) we currently have the NZ and UK defence force netball teams over here to compete against us, there are a few Fijian women on the UK team(Not sure if the Fijian Defence Force would be able to field a side?) Well I am not too sure how this blog thing really works, but is there a way to put an attchment of the family tree onto the site?

I too am really excited about the possibility of a family reunion and learning more about the family tree. Just when you thought you couldn't possibly have any more relations! ha ha

It is encouraging to see that more of us are now beginning to "blog"it
With the Brisbane meeting come and gone, the PacificSmith family is beginning to mean more than just a name. We have formed a working committee and now we are a "team" working towards a goal.
I encourage all you Smithy's out there to introduce yourself and get on board so that we can plan and organise this "big bash" together that's being planned for September 2008.The success of it all will depend on the amount of interest that develops over the comming months.
Information from reliable source indicates that the Sydneysiders will be having their 1st sub-committee meeting over the January long weekend--25th/28th.A few of us "Cane Toads" will be comming down to offer some moral support to you "Cockroaches" ---- so do not disappoint us by not having your meeting.
That's all for now folks until we meet again.
